INtroduction 29:
The diplomatic faculty of Duryodhana was also
attested by his success in gaining the support of Karṇa, who was in fact
the disposed-eldest brother of the Pāṇḍavas. Duryodhana was an expert
not only in diplomacy but also in fighting. It says that his previous
name was Suyodhana, which means a great warrior. He then changed it to
Duryodhana (literally: the unbeatable one) after becoming undefeated and
an expert at battle. However, Bhīma finally killed him after
being given the “signs” by Śri Kṛṣṇa. Some also say that Duryodhana was
the incarnation of Aṅśa (a tiny spark) of Goddess Kali.
The word
“vyuḍham” refers to the Vajra-vyūha formation of the Pāṇḍavas’ army. In
the manuscript of Śabda-ratnāvalī, the word “vyūha” is defined as,
“Samagrasya tu sainyasya, vinyāsaṁ sthāna-bhedataṁ, sa vyūha iti
vikhyāto yuddheṣu pṛthivī-bhujām” which means: vyūha which is that
powerful battle formation of an army being set up very tidily and
rigidly so that the enemy would find no possible way of breaking into
it. Duryodhana became worried after seeing the potent Vajra-vyūha
formation of the Pāṇḍavas’ army. He approached Droṇa in order to make
sure that he would be on the Kauravas’ side, and because Duryodhana knew
well that Droṇa had a strong affection towards the opponent especially
to his most-beloved disciple, Arjuna.
